A Little Sea Air
Calella de Palafrugell & Llafranc
For a beach day with no ambitious agenda
This is where Kevin and I took our engagement photos. Start in Calella de Palafrugell, where traditional fishermen’s houses overlook little beaches and coves. Nearby Llafranc offers a sandy bay and waterfront promenade. Pick a beach, stop for lunch, and give yourself permission to spend the afternoon exactly where you are. Visitapalafrugell
Cost: Free to explore the public beaches and waterfronts; food, parking, and rentals are additional.
Suggested time: A morning or afternoon.
Good to know: The coastal walking routes include stairs and, in places, steep sections. Check the specific route before setting out rather than assuming the entire coastline is an easy promenade. Visitapalafrugell
Jardins de Cap Roig
For gardens, art, and a slower pace
Spend a little time exploring Cap Roig’s botanical gardens, where plants, sculptures, and the coastal setting come together. This is a lovely choice for an outing that leaves plenty of time for lunch or the beach afterward. Visitapalafrugell
Published admission: €12 per adult.
Suggested time: 1–2 hours.
Good to know: The gardens currently list April–September hours of 10 a.m.–8 p.m., but close at 4 p.m. on Cap Roig Festival days. Check the calendar before planning a late-afternoon visit.
Kayaking from Tamariu
For a little adventure on the water
Explore Tamariu’s coastline on a two-hour guided excursion with Kayaking Costa Brava. The route follows rocky cliffs and sheltered corners of the coast, using stable, open kayaks. No previous kayaking experience is required, but participants must know how to swim. Kayaking Costa Brava
Published price: €46 for a single kayak or €72 for a double kayak—€36 each when shared by two people. The guide, kayak, paddle, and buoyancy aid are included.
Duration: 2 hours, plus time for arrival and preparation.
Good to know: Advance booking is required. Departures have a minimum participation requirement and depend on weather and sea conditions. Confirm your meeting point at Tamariu beach, not the company’s office in another town.
Villages, Markets & Local Wine
Pals & Peratallada
For wandering without a particular destination
These medieval villages are made for an unhurried afternoon. In Pals, follow the cobbled streets past golden-stone buildings toward the Torre de les Hores and countryside viewpoints. Peratallada offers narrow lanes, historic walls, artisan shops, and plenty of places to stop for a meal. Choose one, or make an afternoon of both. Visit Pals
Cost: Free to wander the villages; parking, shopping, meals, and any ticketed interiors are additional.
Suggested time: 1–2 hours in either village, or a half-day with lunch.
Good to know: Comfortable shoes are a good idea for the stone streets.
Palafrugell’s Sunday Market
For a relaxed morning and a taste of local life
Browse produce, pastries, local food, and other stalls at Palafrugell’s weekly Sunday market. The market stretches along Carrer Pi i Margall, making this an inviting place to wander before finding a café or picking up something for a picnic. promocioeconomica.palafrugell.cat
Cost: Free to browse; purchases are additional.
Suggested time: 1–2 hours on Sunday morning.
Good to know: Sunday brings the expanded weekly market, with more than the regular food stalls. Aim for the morning rather than planning an afternoon visit.
Mas Oller Winery, Torrent
For discovering the wines of the Empordà
Visit a winery set around a historic farmhouse and take some time to discover the region through its wines. Mas Oller offers both a terrace tasting and a guided winery visit, depending on how much exploring you would like to do. Mas Oller
Published prices: €15 for a one-hour tasting, or €26 for a 90-minute guided tour with tasting. An English-language tour is available.
Good to know: Reserve ahead and select the correct language when booking. Arrange your transportation before the tasting so everyone can enjoy the experience without needing to drive afterward.
A Little Art & Exploration
Girona
For making a day of it
Spend a day exploring Girona’s historic streets, the old Jewish Quarter, the cathedral surroundings, and the houses along the River Onyar. Build your day around wandering, a museum visit, or a long lunch, there is no need to try to see everything. Ajuntament de Girona
Cost: Free to explore the public streets; museums, religious-site admission, guided tours, meals, and transportation are additional.
Suggested time: A full day, including travel.
Good to know: Save this for a day when you have room in your schedule rather than trying to squeeze it between wedding events.
Gala Dalí Castle, Púbol
For art, history, and an unexpected setting
Visit the castle that became Gala’s private retreat and, later, Salvador Dalí’s final studio. The experience takes you through their rooms and the surrounding gardens, offering a more personal perspective on the couple’s lives. Fundació Gala - Salvador Dalí
Published July–August admission: €12 per adult online or €14 at the ticket office.
Suggested time: 1–1½ hours.
Good to know: Advance reservations are recommended. This is the castle in Púbol, not the larger Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres—check the location when purchasing tickets. Guests with mobility needs should review the museum’s accessibility information before visiting.
Worth Reserving a Table
El Far, Llafranc
For Mediterranean food with a view
Beside the Sant Sebastià lighthouse, El Far combines panoramic sea views with Mediterranean cooking, including rice dishes, fish, and seafood. This would be a lovely place to turn a meal into its own occasion. The restaurant has an active reservation system and published operating dates extending into 2027. El Far Hotel Restaurant
Summer budget reference: Its 2026 summer dinner menu was €50 per person, including a welcome glass of cava; additional drinks were extra. The menu was offered during July and August and had to be ordered by the whole table. The 2027 summer menu is not yet confirmed. El Far Hotel Restaurant
Booking note: Reserve ahead, ask about seating preferences, and discuss dietary requirements before booking a set menu.
Casamar, Llafranc
For one special meal
For guests who enjoy making dinner an experience, Casamar offers tasting menus built around local ingredients in a setting overlooking Llafranc’s bay. It is a good choice for a leisurely meal rather than a quick stop between activities. Its official website currently provides restaurant reservations and published menus. Hotel Casamar
Published food prices: €80 for the Punta d’en Blanc menu or €100 for the longer tasting menu, plus a listed €3.90 charge for bread, crackers, and petits fours. Budget separately for beverages. Both menus are served to the entire table. Hotel Casamar
Booking note: Reserve ahead and confirm dietary accommodations directly; the published menus feature substantial seafood.
